Hello,

I was born in August 1993 in Bucharest. After finishing highschool in 2012, I’ve worked for three months as a part-time graphic designer for small projects involving people from U.S.A to India. During that and onwards, I have pushed myself to make the best portfolio for this year’s admission. This is my second time applying for the Character Animation program. Since applying last year, I have aknowledged my mistakes and improved upon them.

I wish to apply for the Character Animation program. Ever since I can remember, I have always been fascinated by all aspects regarding animation, ranging from the movement, the acting to placement and psychology. There is a magical aspect about bringing a character to life and I want to be able to do such things.

One of my biggest influence comes from Glen Keane, followed immediately by Andreas Deja, Chris Sanders and Genndy Tartakovsky. I have a deep admiration for how Glen Keane manages to bring so much personality and motion to each of his drawings using only a few strokes. I always had a soft spot for all of Scott Wills’s background works. His use of color, texture and light have a great influence in my work.
History and different cultures are a big inspiration for me because each have their different characteristics but are intertwined in the grand scheme of things. Every culture and time period holds many amazing visual elements that derived from their way of life and I like to implement that in my art. When drawing, I listen to film scores and music relevant to the piece’s subject and I take it’s essence from it, applying it to the piece.
My favourite movies are everything from Disney, Pixar and Dreamworks, alongside with the LoTR universe. The art of those films are a true treasure and a marvel to look at. Regarding that, I liked the production art of Hotel Transylvania more than the actual film.

I have never traveled abroad due to lack of time, but it is one of my biggest ambitions to visit every corner of the world, to experience it’s wonders in real-time. I can work in any version of Photoshop at an advanced level and other programs I can work on are After Effects, Paint tool Sai, Flash and Illustrator. I will be financing the education from personal funds.

My aspiration is to become a big production film animator and to work with an amazing team in doing so. To create art that will someday change the world. I deeply believe in The Animation Workshop, from all the things I have heard and seen, from all the inspiring artists and teachers there alongside with the amazing creative output each year. I truly believe that The Animation Workshop can help me in achieving my dream.

Yours sincerely,

                    Mario Stefan Grosu
